CRUZ’ING INTO THE NEW YEAR

Steve Cruz has become one of the most recognizable figures in porn today, both as a performer and a director. His talents in front of the camera and behind have earned him accolades from fans and colleagues alike. Steve was gracious enough to grant me this interview to talk about what is going on with him now and what we can expect in the future. You can follow Steve on Facebook, and Twitter.

MATT: Hey Steve, how are you?

STEVE: Great!
.
MATT: You and Bruno Bond have a great new site, www.hardfriction.com. Tell me what your fans can find there.
.
STEVE: Thanks, yes, we just launched the new studio this month. There’s a variety of hot scenes available online now with weekly updates guaranteed to members. You’ll find  everything from hard core sex scenes in the studio, to Screen Tests of the new discoveries that walk through our door. We try to get out of the studio often and travel. This year we shot in Chicago, London, San Diego and Australia.  Bruno and I pass around the camera in our series called ‘Hook-ups’, which makes it feel like you’re really there. Chemistry and real sex is quality of everything we shoot. We try to shoot all types of guys, all races, body types… whatever is masculine and hot!

MATT: You’ve won quite a few awards in the last couple of years. Tell me about your awards and which one do you think means the most to you?

STEVE: Yeah I’ve been lucky! Especially at the Grabby’s. I took home 2009 Performer of the Year. It was a wonderful surprise, doesn’t get better than that! Naked Sword also presented me with their highest honor in 2009. The award is a real sword, pretty impressive.

MATT: You have two new DVD releases with Raging Stallion, Focus and Refocus. What are the themes of the movies and what can fans look forward to seeing in the movies?
.
STEVE: It’s a a two part porn murder mystery. There was a real script and some of us took acting lessons. But all of that is elaborate polish. What makes the movie great is the sex. All of the performances are hot. I had the time of my life filming with Ricky Sinz and Adam Killian. You can tell we’re having fun with it. It’s one of the lighter moments in an intense film. I play a porn star, the lead character becomes obsessed with me as people start dying. I fall into the hands of the killer in the end… my death scene took over 30 takes because of the condensation from the shower effecting the shot. I had to hold my breath for minutes each take, all for 15-30 seconds of film. Thats movie magic!
.
MATT: Hard Friction 2 is due out in April. What can you tell us about that?
.
STEVE: Like Hard Friction, which is out now, HF2 is another collection of our favorite scenes. I took a break from editing Bruno’s scene right now. The way he goes all the way down on this fat uncut cock!  Everything I love to watch! \ This time were looking to expand the collection to include a second feature disc of our ‘Hookups’ and ‘Screen Tests’ —shot on our recent trip to Sydney. AND a hot scene with Raging Stallion Man Remy Delaine!

MATT: Tell me about www.stevecruzxxx.com?

STEVE: I built and maintain the site myself. Now that www.hardfriction.com is a membership site, www.stevecruzxxx.com will remain free to fans!  There you’ll find the latest news and links to my projects. You can also find all of my movies in the movie section- not just my performances, but also the movies I’ve directed for Falcon.

MATT: You are passionate about safe sex. Your site, www.howiroll.info is dedicated to educating people about safe sex. Talk a little about the site.
.
STEVE: Another website I designed. I keep it alive with my own resources, its been online for over 2 years. My hope was to inspire real men and fans to think about the quality of sex they are having. Though risky forms of sex have become popular it doesn’t mean we grow bored with safer sex or forget responsibility. The site is meant to encourage everyone— positive and negative men alike— to consider how we can have hotter sex without spreading HIV. There is also information about STDs and testing. I wanted to go one step further and actually provide free information and some resources.
.
MATT: Tell me about your blog, www.stevecruzblog.com.
.
STEVE: My blog has been so many things. A place to promote my movies, a daily beard diary, a game of truth of dare. It’s really an online zine, and my space where I can interface with my fans. And for the fans, I try to keep it entertaining without resorting to personal mudslinging for attention. Sure I vent and bitch sometimes but it’s not mean spirited. I’m not into bringing people down. So many blogs have fallen into that trap- actively appealing to negative controversy.
Frankly its been done and overdone. It lacks imagination for one. And I just didn’t want that in my space. I post constructive criticism if it relates and if its respectful, but my blog comments are moderated.
It’s not that I’m a porn pollyanna, ask anyone who knows me there are people I dislike, I’m human. And some people really are assholes. Who they are remains my business. When we do have a controversial subject I make sure critical comments remain respectful.
.
MATT: You’re a talented performer and director. Which is the most rewarding for you?
.
STEVE: I can’t decide because I love doing both! I also enjoy operating a camera while being directed. I’ve been working closely with Chris Ward this year shooting scenes he directs. I can say that if I stopped performing I would feel like a light went out. It’s in my blood!

MATT: How did you get into porn?
.
STEVE: The gay mafia! Blackmail! No actually Chris Ward scouted me and offered me my first two pictures.
.
MATT: Outside of the porn industry you have some interesting hobbies, music and painting. Tell us a little about what you do when you’re not working, your music, your art, etc.
.
STEVE: Since I launched my own studio I haven’t had much time to play my bass or compose music, but some of my music is featured in ‘Hard Friction’, scene 5. Both Bruno and I are fine artists but neither of us have completed a painting this year, again we’ve been working so hard, we haven’t had leisure time.
.
MATT: I’m a painter myself. Do you prefer acrylics or oils?
.
STEVE: I work in acrylic. I work fast and apply several layers. My work is in a non objective abstract expressionist style, and very colorful, lots of movement.

MATT: How are you spending your holidays this year?
.
STEVE: With Bruno. We’re staying home with the cat. Quality personal time, long overdue.
.
MATT: Is there anything that you would like to say to your fans?
.
STEVE: Thank you. Without your support Steve Cruz wouldn’t exist. Every performance and every movie, is me working hard for you. Merry Christmas! Be safe, healthy and prosperous in 2010.
.
MATT: Thanks Steve. I hope you and Bruno have a great Christmas and a fantastic New Year!
